Running Start
Running Start gives high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to get a jump on their college education while still in high school, even being able to earn an associate degree. Qualified students attend classes at either Columbia Basin College or Washington State University Tri-Cities tuition free, though they are responsible for the cost of books, student fees and must provide their own transportation.
Students receive both high school and college credit for these classes, which accelerates their progress through the education system.
Qualifications:
- Junior or Senior Class standing
- A qualifying score on the Placement Test
- Acceptance by WSU-TC or CBC
Running Start Options
Getting Started
Students will need to meet with their high school counselor to ensure they qualify for running start. Class selection and additional opportunities should be discussed with your counselor.
The process of applying for Running Start often starts in the winter of a student's sophomore or junior year (for a fall entry into the college).
Need-Based Waivers
Need-based waivers are available for qualifying low income Running Start students for all fees other than tuition or operating fees. These fees can include books, course fees and other costs.
Once documentation has been submitted and approved, the student will be eligible for the fee waiver for the remainder of their enrollment as a Running Start student.
Students should discuss their options with their high school counselor to learn if they are eligible for need-based waivers.
